Survivors from before the Fall

The Ancients are immortal leaders who lived before the catastrophe that ended the old world. Paradox says forgotten technology has kept them alive for hundreds of years, giving them a direct memory of the civilization that current Dustlanders know only through ruins, stories, and recovered machines.

They are not described as passive witnesses. The official site presents them as rulers with their own vision of who should control the future. The September 4 developer interview calls them ancient tyrants and says they have divided the continent among themselves.

That makes the Ancients part of the larger world structure: a growing tribe does not expand into empty territory, but into a landscape already shaped by powerful survivors, rival societies, environmental scars, and old technology.

Why the Ancients matter

Afterworld’s central tension is not simply old technology versus new society. The same pre-Fall power that can transform a nation also helped destroy the previous world. Ancients embody that tension because they combine political authority, dangerous technological knowledge, and a personal connection to the past.

The official announcement says players eventually face other growing empires over the fate of the continent. The Ancients appear to be among the largest obstacles in that progression. The interview says a player may try to defeat them from within or grow strong enough to challenge them from outside.

Those phrases establish multiple broad approaches, but they do not reveal espionage actions, internal factions, war rules, victory conditions, or the exact meaning of defeating an Ancient.

What official lore suggests

Developer Diary #2 says plans are beginning to move in distant lands ruled by figures such as an undying president and a warrior-maiden made of sunfire. These are first-party setting teasers, not a complete roster or confirmed character database. The diary deliberately leaves identities and outcomes incomplete.

The same diary explains that old shelters are opening and ancient war machines are waking as the campaign era begins. That timing connects the Ancients to the wider transition from wandering bands to competing cities and empires.

Recovered technology also connects them to discovery and the Ideas Tree, but current sources do not state that every Ancient controls a specific Idea, relic, or progression path.

What remains unavailable

Paradox has not published a complete Ancient roster, fixed locations, biographies, abilities, diplomatic behavior, military strength, or encounter rules. The current evidence also does not confirm whether an Ancient can be selected as a playable ruler, permanently allied, recruited, replaced, or eliminated through a particular mechanic.

Names or figures visible in promotional material should not be converted into gameplay claims without first-party explanation. The same restraint applies to tier lists and strategy advice: no reproducible evidence supports ranking the Ancients.

Evidence boundary

This guide covers the confirmed concept, narrative role, and broad strategic position of the Ancients. Individual identities, locations, mechanics, and optimal responses remain unavailable.
