What an Origin is

An Origin is the starting frame for an Afterworld campaign. It tells the player where a survivor group comes from and gives the tribe an initial identity before the larger work of survival, settlement building, and political development begins.

Developer Diary #1 says the player gives the starting tribe a concise background rather than defining a complete civilization at the outset. Most consequential decisions are then made over years of play as the society takes shape. That makes an Origin a beginning, not a finished answer to what the nation will become.

Origins connect directly to the confirmed campaign loop: a small group enters the world, secures essential resources, encounters other societies, and gradually acquires the capacity to build a wider state.

Officially described examples

Paradox has repeatedly used two examples:

  • Shelterfolk crawl out of a failing nuclear bunker. This establishes a direct connection to pre-Fall infrastructure and a clear reason to enter the wasteland.
  • Wayward zealots search the dustlands for their goddess. This foregrounds belief and identity in a world where religion is again a major social force.

These examples are official descriptions, but the current public material does not provide their exact starting resources, modifiers, locations, characters, events, or exclusive progression. It would therefore be misleading to compare their power or recommend one as a stronger start.

Origin and later identity

Afterworld’s broader design emphasizes adaptation and discovery. The tribe’s later character is shaped through resource decisions, relationships, laws, crises, technology, and religion. An Origin may provide context for those choices, but the reviewed sources do not establish a deterministic path from a specific Origin to a specific build.

The Ideas Tree reinforces this distinction. Progression is described as responding to what the tribe actually finds and experiences, so two campaigns that begin from similar circumstances may still encounter different opportunities.

What is not known

Paradox says there are several other playable Origins, but no complete roster or final count has been published. There is also no authoritative list of:

  • starting bonuses or penalties;
  • fixed leaders, locations, or populations;
  • unique events or Ideas;
  • difficulty ratings;
  • multiplayer restrictions; or
  • comparative performance.

Community screenshots, speculative lists, and tier rankings cannot fill those gaps. They may identify useful questions, but only current first-party documentation or reproducible game data can support a reference table.

Evidence boundary

This page records the role of Origins and the two examples explicitly described by Paradox. It does not infer mechanics from names, artwork, interface fragments, or community discussion. A complete reference must wait for additional official diaries or testable game access.
