Afterworld is set in a ruined North America whose geography is meant to be recognizable without producing the same strategic world every time. The official description calls the map procedurally generated; Developer Diary #2 explains the more precise model behind that phrase.

Handcrafted foundation, variable history

Each new campaign begins with a handcrafted map containing pre-Fall locations and terrain. The game then simulates a semi-random apocalypse that alters that foundation. Resources, tribes, threats, and parts of the world’s history can differ between campaigns.

The result is neither a wholly fixed historical map nor an unrelated random landmass. A player may recognize the underlying place while finding that its environmental condition, local powers, or recent past has changed. That variation supports the wider survival-to-empire loop without erasing the setting’s connection to old America.

Official examples of variation

Developer Diary #2 gives several examples to illustrate the model:

  • Los Angeles might become a pilgrimage center for Pop-Cultists in one campaign and a smoking crater in another.
  • The underground Subunion may suffer a destructive civil war before the campaign, face it later, or emerge united and ready to conquer the surface.
  • A nuclear strike can leave little drinkable water while preserving recoverable material for people able to survive the radiation.
  • Extreme regional disasters may include Glassweed across the Great Plains or an enduring cyclone in Cascadia.

These are official examples of possible outcomes, not a promise that every listed event appears in every game. They also do not reveal frequency, trigger rules, severity values, or the exact borders of affected regions.

Geography shapes settlement decisions

Safe fertile land is described as valuable because much of the world is difficult to inhabit. Tribes may adapt their culture and way of life to hostile conditions, while others migrate and survive by grazing herds or scavenging.

That world framing connects directly to settlements and resources. Food, water, fuel, routes, and migration all depend on what the map presents. The official sources establish that relationship but do not yet provide placement bonuses, terrain modifiers, travel times, convoy ranges, or a complete resource layer.

The official Explore the Map experience

Paradox’s public map page follows the Turns Expedition through the setting. Its landing screen confirms that this is an in-world exploration feature, and the main official site presents it as narrative material about the map of Afterworld.

This wiki does not copy that interactive experience or treat its artwork as reusable media. Visible labels and stories can support attributed setting context, but browser visibility does not grant redistribution rights or prove game mechanics.

What North America currently means

Official copy consistently says North America or America. The reviewed sources do not publish a complete playable boundary, map dimensions, province count, or definitive list of included countries and regions. Questions about Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, oceans, or off-map interaction therefore remain open unless Paradox answers them directly.

Evidence boundary

This page explains the confirmed fixed-versus-procedural model and examples supplied by Paradox. It does not assign landmark bonuses, fixed faction starts, disaster probabilities, map size, travel rules, or complete geographic coverage.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is Afterworld's map procedurally generated?

Partly. Paradox says each campaign starts from a handcrafted map of pre-Fall locations and terrain, then a semi-random simulated apocalypse changes the resulting world.

Is Afterworld set only in the United States?

Official sources describe North America and a rediscovered America, but the reviewed material does not publish a complete playable boundary or definitive region list.
